Space QKD
The utilization of satellites appears to be particularly advantageous because most optical paths traversed by a single photon occur in free space, leading to a lower loss compared to ground-based single-photon distribution via atmospheric or fiber-optic links. Hence, satellites are widely recognized as one of the most efficient methods to achieve global quantum communication with current and short-term resources.
Furthermore, satellites are instrumental in implementing QKD over long distances with untrusted nodes. While most long-distance QKD implementations currently lack a quantum repeater, other satellite-based applications include quantum strategies for establishing a secure and robust international time scale via a quantum network of clocks, enhancing the baseline of telescopes for improved astronomical imaging, and exploring fundamental physics.
For the successful deployment of a satellite-based quantum internet, several factors such as current technological knowledge, resource availability and economic efficiency must be considered.
We are ready to derive sufficiently detailed and concise technical requirements to implement quantum hardware — both on the satellite and in the optical ground station receiver station with our deep understanding of the cutting-edge research in house and the scientific literature.
qtlabs offers comprehensive support throughout the development process, starting with the analysis of your business case to better understand user requirements. We provide advice and assistance in the continuing development phase, conduct feasibility studies, and build prototypes to ensure the successful implementation of your quantum communication solution.
